Curious about life in a Buddhist monastery:

How do we start our day?

What do we eat?

Why do we shave our heads?

What do we do all day in those buildings?

What inspired us to become Buddhist Nuns, or were we tricked into this lifestyle?

Inside the Prayer Hall

By Lee

As Buddhist nuns, we strive to practice improving our mindsets with a genuine, kind heart everyday. I was curious what some of our Buddhist nuns were thinking as they prepared for the New Year.

A Buddhist nun next to me quietly wiped down our cushions in a rhythmic, almost meditative state. She looked so focused and calm. I asked her what she was thinking. She smiled and said she hoped that everyone who used these cushions would sit in comfort and have much meaningful reflection and growth.

I saw another Buddhist nun hanging up lanterns in the prayer hall. Again, my investigative mind was curious and I had to ask what she was thinking. A little surprised by my question, she laughed and said that she hoped to bring more light to the world, especially during dark times like the pandemic.

This left me thinking...We all have our routines and do many things each day.  Why not put in a little bit more kindness as I do these things? If I just add another dash of love, kindness, gratitude wherever I go, that energy will definitely carry through to others and make its way to brighten up the world just a little more. And how great would that be!

Wishing all much peace and good health!

Bring it on: Exam Mode

By Tina

Last month, our monastery entered exam-mode. Every corner I took, there’s a nun reciting the Buddhist sutras, or texts.

While gardening.

After prayers.

At 4 AM.

The rhythm of recitation reverberated throughout the monastery.

Even though I went to grad school before joining the monastery, I never really recited anything before...let alone anything in a foreign language. So, I had my doubts if I could trek this uphill battle. 12,000 characters in two hours—can I make it?

There was something about the challenge that I really liked!

Yet, each time I started, I couldn’t tell if it’s my tongue or stomach that’s twisting into knots. Regardless, I started practicing. Starting from 50 characters, repeating over and over again. Just when I thought I got it down, I’d forget.

Day 1 of exams, and I still had 3,000 characters to review. I wasn't sure if I could do it and I wondered if I should just give up.

It was hard...was it worth it?

I started to think about how lucky I am to be here learning on the Island. I thought about how if I could memorize these texts, what a benefit to myself and others it would be. I've experienced how each line of the text can truly help one pull through life’s difficulties--filled with positive quotes and ways to think healthily, constructively, and happily.

I felt like the total underdog. But, I knew that if someone like me could do it, it'd give others hope to take on the challenge too.

With these thoughts in mind, I was ready to face this last battle.

At first, I blanked out.

But, upon thinking of PEI, all my friends here, and my family, I was ready to put forth my best effort. Thanks to everyone, I made it out in one piece!

Looking back, I'm happiest that I gave it my all and took on the challenge. In ten years time, I'll still be proud of myself for challenging myself and not giving up.
